Pretty Hate Machine… dancing

It’s that kind of album that makes you want to get up and dance… If only I could dance. My rigorous martial arts training and Hawaiian elementary school May Day performances haven’t done a thing for my dancing skills.
Speaking of dancing, it’s twice now that I’ve gotten iPod dance commercial audition solicitations from a talent agent I somehow got hooked up with. At one point I think I was asked to describe my style, but the only description that came to mind was “embarrassingly ridiculous.” I wonder if there’s a market for that “style”? I wasn’t about to audition and find out.
I’m also terrible at that dancing video game, which my little bro is terrific at. I’d like to laugh at that, but when I watch him play it’s actually damned impressive. Even out of practice as he is, he managed to draw a crowd at the local arcade. He sweated out all the stages, and when it was over, everyone clapped and someone offered to buy him another game.
I guess I’ll have to settle for thrashing about in the privacy of my own home. Or in public (pretending to be) drunk, because then such behavior seems to be more or less forgivable… until I injure someone with a combination crazy dance groove + flying razor kick to the groin.
Anyway where was I? Randomness.
Trent Reznor is a genius.
I’d like to see a real drummer face off with a champion Drum Mania (the drumming video game) player. That thing is pretty much a drummer training machine complete with electronic drum kit.
Hungry for broccoli.
I’m finally heading back to SF early next week. I hear it’s cold there. God help me. Buddha!
I swear by ibuprofen for headaches.
I can’t get the White Stripes song “Seven Nation Army” out of my head.

You should try for the iPod commercial–just for laughs if nothing else.

ahahhahaha…but u do realize….that when ur music career takes off…and u have to perform…u have to dance.
hmmm…well…I got something for ya….I have a BART card that’s got like 2 bucks on it…..if u want it….I’ll mail it to ya.

Well it’s too late to audition now… I think I’d have to be in the right (silly) frame of mind at the time and also very bored to go through the trouble of auditioning. We’ll see if it comes up again…
I think dancing is more for the R&B / hip-hop / dance music crowd. I’m trying to reach out to the thrash-and-jump-about-wildly crowd. Err, right.
Thanks for the BART card offer… but there’s actually plenty you can do with those BART cards even outside the city… check out:

it’ll take me forever to store ‘em up… :p
I rarely take BART, let alone rely on it. ^o^

Emberrassingly ridiculous! Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel when I try dancing sober. Drunken dancing on the other hand, while being fun, becomes increasingly dangerous. Not because of gravity but because of copyrights:

Now that I know you’ve invented my preferred dancing style I hope you’re not going to sue me…
By the way, I just realized that I’ll be in SF for a week while attending a conference in early march. Are you doing any live gigs in your hometown during that time? Hehe. Probably not… any other suggestions what to do in SF after a long day of talks and lectures?
About headaches: you either take Ibuprofen or finally stop watching that White Stripes clip! Godamit!!!

Wow, thanks for the warning. Now I have to look for videos of the “Electric Slide” just to make absolutely sure that I never inadvertently move in some way that reminds anyone of it in public. Soon people will start copyrighting their funny walks… scary!
I think my embarrassingly ridiculous style of dancing changes pretty much every time I perform it. Mostly it consists of a series of wild random flailings of the arms and legs followed by almost falling over in some new and exciting way. And given that I would make a serious effort to hunt down and burn any recordings of my “performance,” I think you’re safe! YAY! Carry on!
Sadly I do not have a band right now and have no plans to perform anything soon, not even ridiculous dance moves (these happen rather spontaneously without warning). I don’t know offhand what special interesting things are going on in SF in March either, but I will be sure to keep my ears open and alert you!
Generally I like to do such things as walk outside and look at nice buildings and crazy homeless people, both of which are in abundance here… but I completely understand if that is not your thing. And you really have to watch out for the latter as they can be quite unpredictable. As for the buildings, I think they rarely fall over and are considered mostly harmless.

Domo arigatou for your suggestions. Actually I just love watching people! Including but not limited to the crazy and/or homeless ones. Especially in other countries. Relaxing at a cafe, sipping on a cup of coffee while watching the locals can be a lot more interesting than lengthy sightseeing tours.
And of course I’ll also take a walk through the streets of San Francisco! Dodging random attacks of homeless villains where necessary. I’m used to that from Final Fantasy anyway.

Are you in town for the GDC? I highly recommend getting out during the day at some point and doing some random touristy things. There’s plenty to see near downtown… museums, Chinatown, the library… and interesting people to watch, of course! And if you get a chance, you should definitely check out Alcatraz! Oh and there’s Japantown too, not far from town…

Yup, I’m in SF for the GDC. I really do hope I’ll have time for some sightseeing during daylight hours! At least on Sunday I’ll have the chance to check out some of the places you recommended (while fighting jetlag and trying to stay awake). Alcatraz sounds cool. And I want to ride one of those old cozy cable cars!
You also have a Japantown? Sugee! Gotta go there for some Ramen or Yakitori.
Hmm… I hope I won’t need a rental car to get around?
